BUBO

A pet rat journeys through a land ravaged by plague to find the boy he loves. Along the way he picks up a hitchhiking flea who promises to help find the boy – if the rat can breach the guarded town housing the land’s last survivors. Together, they must face a tremendous cat, a battalion of crows and enraged ghosts to reach their respective ends.
BUBO is an illustrated poem narrated by Plague itself. At nearly one hundred stanzas, the poem’s rhyme scheme allows the reader’s focus to stay on the narrative while never losing a steady rhythm that begs to be read out loud. Fleshed out by eighteen watercolor illustrations that capture the colorful yet dark atmosphere of the world, this illustrated novel is for fans of the grim elements found in classic fairytales.
The First Page
I awoke on an unknown shore
in a year that’s long forgotten
with a ferocious appetite
to turn the living rotten.
Further inland I beheld
the most alluring bounty
of tasty townsfolk, young and old,
settled in the county.
Partitioned onto parasites,
my spread was slow but steady
and went unnoticed by my prey
who clearly were not ready.
For years I pillaged handily
with every trick found in my bag,
traps and terrors so well laid
I hit the slightest snag.
My work was done so well, it seemed,
that for a hundred miles
the only bodies I could reach
were gathered into piles
buried by the last survivors
who, with guile and confounding gall
had taken refuge in a town
surrounded by a wall;
and with so few lives remaining,
I was stuck in a grave abode
of freshly festering fellows
by the side of the road.
A shameful spot to find oneself,
looking back I can admit,
yet any bound by mortal law
can wind up in a pit.
